A witness in the area informed police that Mendez was shot in the face and that the shooter fled the area. The shooter was identified by the witness as Juan Gutierrez and the driver of the vehicle that Gutierrez fled in was identified as Kenneth Vazquez.
Based on the information from the witness and video surveillance from the area, it was determined that Gutierrez shot Mendez and it was also determined that Vazquez drove Gutierrez to and from the shooting.
A department wide email was sent out with a photo of both Gutierrez and Vazquez and information that they were both wanted for questioning in the homicide of Mendez.
On Tuesday while in the area of Millbury Street, officers assigned to the Vice Squad located Gutierrez in the area of Fernando’s Motors at 238 Millbury Street. Some officers set up a perimeter around the area while other officers approached Fernando’s Motors to locate Gutierrez.
Gutierrez was located sitting in a gray colored BMW and when approached by officers, he exited the vehicle and took off running and was taken into custody in the area of Ward Street.
During a search of Gutierrez, officers recovered a clear plastic baggie with 11 smaller plastic baggies which appeared to be heroin and 6 plastic baggies which appeared to be cocaine.
Shortly after the arrest of Gutierrez, officers in another area of the city located Kenneth Vazquez on Coburn Ave walking in the direction of Hamilton Street wearing a black backpack with yellow straps.
As officers attempted to approach Vazquez he fled in the direction of a path that was in a wooded area. An officer followed him but lost him as the path split into multiple directions.
Another officer in the area located Vazquez in the area of Quinsig State Park, where he was taken into custody.
When Vazquez was taken into custody the backpack that he had been previously wearing was not on him. After a search of the area with the assistance of a police dog, the backpack was recovered and inside was a loaded semi-automatic firearm.
